Last year we were approached to style a living room for the most beautiful growing family on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The clients were a couple who had just moved into a bigger home – a new 3-bedroom townhouse in Balgowlah – in anticipation of the arrival of their baby boy.

The increased space proved to be both a blessing and a challenge as they had a whole extra room that was sitting empty and unused. That’s where Cote came in!

Mum-to-be Linda, who owns chic t-shirt brand Bon Label, knew she wanted a space that felt fresh, inviting and comfortable. She wanted a multi-purpose living room that reflected the contemporary look of the rest of the house with an added layer of femininity and softness.

We were tasked with designing an ultra-flexible layout to be used primarily as a family relaxation space, but also as a playroom, an area to entertain guests, and an extension of the outdoor seating area.

We had to address the needs of the growing family throughout the scheme by sourcing items that were practical, safe, and multi-functional.

Finally, we needed to curate an interior that felt relaxed and welcoming, yet had an interesting and sophisticated sense about it.

Again, the room was literally empty, so we had a big blank canvas to work from (just the way we like it)!

Our clients wanted to keep the palette neutral but weren’t afraid of pattern or texture, so we infused the room with personality through layers of natural materials and a bit of pattern play in the cushions, art and accessories.

We kept the foundation pieces quite simple in greys and whites which means that they can remain the same as the space and style evolve as the family grows.

With large glass doors leading to the balcony, it was essential to create a seamless flow and that much desired Australian indoor/outdoor lifestyle. We brought the outdoors in through heaps of greenery, mellow timbers and materials like jute, linen, rattan, and wool.

To give the room its own personality, we included pieces with a coastal tribal aesthetic. From a Malawi cane chairs and timber stools to mudprint cushions and juju hats, each piece weaves together to tell a story.

While most of the furniture was in before the bub’s arrival, he did beat us to it by showing up a couple weeks before his due date!

Nonetheless, our clients were thrilled to bring their new bundle of joy home to a space made just for them to be together. They shared some very kinds words about us:

“Coco was above and beyond – she not only created a usable, functional and truly beautiful space for us but also freely imparted so much of her knowledge and expertise.”

We are just so happy we were able to help them create a beautiful room for them to come together as a family!

Here is mum, Linda, and six-month old Racer enjoying each other in their new family room. Seeing our clients that happy is the best part of our job. It seriously doesn’t get any better than that!
